NAGOYA UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

In memory of NUAL Advisor, Uichiro Niwa

January 9, 2026

On behalf of the Nagoya University Alumni Association, I would like to express my deepest condolences upon hearing the news of the passing of Advisor Uichiro Niwa.
Uichiro Niwa gave his utmost efforts to the establishment of Nagoya University Alumni Association in October 2002. From that point until October 2023 - a total of 21 years - he served as Vice President, contributing greatly to the development of the association.
Niwa also served as chairperson of the NUAL Kanto branch from its establishment in March 2003 until October 2023, making all efforts to build a foundation for bringing together alumni in the Tokyo metropolitan area and supporting alumni activities there.
Furthermore, he was the first speaker for the NUAL Lectures, held in collaboration with Gakushikai since 2014. Drawing on his experiences traveling across China as Japan's ambassador plenipotentiary, Niwa delivered a thought-provoking lecture on 'Globalization and the Future of Japan', touching on the political and economic situation in China and the outlook for Japan. His words left a deep impression not only on alumni but also on the many others who joined the audience, and have remained the foundation of this lecture series to this day.
Niwa's striking insights and his passion for activities that connect the university to broader society and to its alumni are deeply engraved in the history of the Nagoya University Alumni Association.

I would like to express my deepest respect and gratitude for his life achievements, and offer my heartfelt condolences.

Masaharu Shibata

President, Nagoya University Alumni Association
