Inaugural Meeting of the Mongolia Branch

On Thursday, September 3, 2009, the Mongolia Branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association held its inaugural meeting at Bayangol Hotel in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. This event was timed to coincide with the three-year anniversary of the Nagoya University Research and Education Center for Japanese Law (Mongolia) and the opening ceremony for the Nagoya University Field Research Center. The event was attended by many Mongolian alumni and persons related to Nagoya University. University President Hamaguchi, Trustee Saburi, University Vice-President Watanabe, and Dean of the Graduate School of Law Sugiura were among the representatives from the University. The two Centers and the Medical School were also represented, and the Chairperson of NUAL Cooperation Committee, Professor Nakano, and I, Yoshito Itoh, attended in the name of NUAL.

Interpretation into Mongolian and Japanese was provided for the meeting. The alumni register prepared for the occasion listed the names of nearly seventy Mongolian former international students. Including Nagoya University personnel, nearly sixty persons were present at this first meeting. Dr. Jigjidsuren Altantuya, former administrative vice minister and present project manager of the Ministry of Public Health, was named chairperson of the Mongolia Branch. Dr. Altantuya graduated from the Nagoya University Medical School Young Leaders' Program.

Professor Nakano acted as master of ceremonies for the meeting, which opened with an address by Dr. Hamaguchi in which he expressed his gratitude that the Mongolia Branch should be founded in the footsteps of the seven existing overseas branches of NUAL, in conjunction with the third anniversary of the Research and Education Center for Japanese Law (Mongolia) and the opening of the Nagoya University Field Research Center. He also expressed his determination to enhance international exchanges at Nagoya University. At present, he indicated, there are 1300 international students at Nagoya University, of which twenty-five are from Mongolia. He appealed to the Mongolia Branch to provide spiritual support to graduates from the University.

Next, I myself, as NUAL Executive Coordinator, transmitted NUAL President Toyoda's congratulations and gave an account of NUAL's establishment and principles. I also announced that the alumni register managed by the University will soon become accessible through the Internet, so that members will henceforth be asked to modify their address online. Finally, I expressed my wish that this branch of NUAL become a base for the internationalization of Nagoya University.

After the speeches, Dr. Hamaguchi presented the new branch chairperson, Dr. Altantuya, with the Mongolia Branch banner and official NUAL Branch certificate. Dr. Altantuya then addressed the assembly. She noted the alumni's great happiness at the founding of this branch and their desire to follow the principles of NUAL by sharing information about their alma mater, spreading the word to others about Nagoya University, and contributing to international exchange. She also spoke about the necessity of creating Branch regulations that include a process for electing a branch chairperson, and the importance of implementing fundraising projects for sending students abroad to Nagoya University in order to ensure the continuation of Mongolian alumni activities.

Following the inaugural meeting, a commemorative photograph was taken with the university president and branch banner surrounded by alumni. Participants seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the inaugural ceremony.

The meeting was followed by a reception hosted by Nagoya University at which the branch banner was displayed and everyone was able to interact in a relaxed atmosphere.

I would like to extend special thanks to Professor Nakamura of the Nagoya University Graduate School of Law for his invaluable help in organizing this event.
